It's a unique sight for a seaside town, worth seeing just for this.

For two days once a year, Hayama's long-established Hikage Chaya opens its storefront for a festival. This will be its 58th year.

There's the famous mochi pounding, food stalls selling takoyaki, yakitori, and shaved ice. Night stalls offer yo-yo fishing, target shooting, ring toss, and rock-paper-scissors candy. There are also demonstrations of candy artistry and Edo-style calligraphy, as well as performances by the Shrine Festival Music Preservation Society and Japanese taiko drums. On the La Maree side, seafood such as grilled scallops and turban shells, and grilled tuna skewers are available.

This is not a festival created for tourists, but an event that locals look forward to every year. It runs from 4 PM to 9 PM. After spending the day at Morito Kaigan, it's within walking distance.

⛩️ Zushi Kaigan Umi Matsuri (Wasshoi! Zushi Kaigan Summer Festival)

Zushi Kaigan (Zushi City) / Neighboring town of Zushi. About 10-15 minutes by car from various facilities in Hayama.

This is a beach festival at Zushi Kaigan that marks the end of summer vacation. Food stalls selling yakitori and shaved ice, super ball scooping, goldfish scooping, ring toss, and masks. All the typical Japanese summer festival stalls line the sandy beach.

It's a short festival, only an hour and a half in the evening, so you can drop by before dinner.Postponed in case of rain (reserve day 8/30), so please be sure to check the organizer's announcement before going.

This market is held only on Sunday mornings in front of the Fishermen's Cooperative. You'll find vegetables, fish, bread, cakes, and Hayama's local specialties.

It ends in 2 hours, and good items sell out quickly.Guests checking out on Sunday mornings can also be directed here as a place to stop by on their way home.
