Did you know that you can do a workation at Roopt, a share house chain primarily located in Miyagi Prefecture? This time, Takashi Sumida, a freelance editor residing in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, stayed at Roopt Okumatsushima, a share house in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, for a 7-night, 8-day workation. Having lived in multiple locations for two years myself, I've done workations all over Japan, but I felt that this workation was unique to Miyagi, unique to a share house, and unique to Roopt. I will report on my workation experience and share it with you!
Workation is a portmanteau of "work" and "vacation," referring to a way of working where one lives and works in a different location than usual, aiming to improve productivity and mental well-being for a better life. With the spread of telework due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more individuals and companies are adopting workations.
Leveraging Roopt's characteristic of being a "share house available from 1 day," we also accept workation stays of approximately one week. This time, I did a workation at Roopt Okumatsushima, located in Shintome, Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, one of Roopt's share houses in Miyagi Prefecture. The workation on the Miyagi coast, where it was getting a little chilly and autumn was in full swing, was very fulfilling. Although workation facilities are increasing nationwide, there are very few examples of workations in share houses, so I will write about my experience and impressions of this "share house workation" from that perspective as well!
Workation Period: November 1 (Tue) - November 8 (Tue), 2022
First, I will briefly introduce "Roopt Okumatsushima," where I stayed for a 7-night, 8-day workation this time.
It is a share house located in the western part of Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, about a 15-minute walk from Higashina Station on the JR Senseki Line. As shown in the photos below, it is a share house characterized by the size of its building and rooms, with private rooms averaging 12 tatami mats. In addition to accepting residents, it also accommodates groups and families, fostering communication not only among residents but also with others.

Now, let's get to the main topic and describe how I spent my 7-night, 8-day workation.
I arrived at Roopt Okumatsushima in the evening of the first day, so I spent the rest of the day making the bed, having dinner, and finishing up some work. The residents each had different daily routines, and I couldn't meet everyone, so I went to sleep looking forward to meeting them the next day.
The room where I stayed for a week. There was a space of similar size in front, so I had a spacious 12-tatami-mat room to myself.
By the morning of the second day, I had met all the residents, and the day began with conversations like, "Since we're here, why don't we all have a meal together sometime?" and "What day are you free?" It was a happy moment, as I felt I could quickly join the group, partly because I already knew some of the residents.
On this day, I spent most of my time teleworking in the share house. I usually used my private room for online meetings, but when no one else was in the share house, I would also do online meetings and work in the living room. Just being able to work in a spacious place, which is rare when living alone, calmed my mind and made my work more efficient.
In fact, I felt that I was more productive at Roopt Okumatsushima than usual. By the way, I also went for a run during my work breaks, and the clear air made it a pleasant run.
Many parts of Roopt Okumatsushima have been stylishly renovated, and the kitchen design, in particular, is fashionable, so as a photographer, I held an impromptu photo session for my favorite bottle. Both the share house and the town itself have little noise, creating an environment that stimulated creativity. Incidentally, all the photos and videos used in this article were taken by me.
Since I was there, I decided to eat out, so I drove to "Mori no KITCHEN," a restaurant that mainly serves set meals for lunch. They accept credit cards and electronic money, which is convenient for those who don't carry much cash. By the way, "Mori no KITCHEN" is located at the following address.
