[Workation] I tried a week-long workation at the "Roopt" share house in Miyagi.

Did you know that you can do a workation at Roopt, a share house chain mainly operating in Miyagi Prefecture? Roopt's share houses accept not only residents but also overnight guests, and you can use them for a workation. They are equipped with power outlets and Wi-Fi, and you can work in various locations depending on your mood, using private rooms or community spaces.

This time, Takashi Sumida, a freelance editor residing in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, stayed at "Roopt Okumatsushima," a shared house in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, for a 7-night, 8-day workation. Having lived a multi-location lifestyle myself for two years, I've done workations all over Japan, but I felt that this workation was unique to Miyagi, unique to a shared house, and unique to Roopt. I'll report on my workation experience and share it with you all!

For a workation in Miyagi, be sure to check out Roopt.

Workation is a portmanteau of "work" and "vacation," referring to a work style where individuals live and work in a different location than usual, using it as a means to improve productivity and mental health for a better life. With the spread of telework due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of individuals and companies adopting workation.

How to do a workation in a Roopt shared house

Taking advantage of Roopt's characteristic of offering "share houses where you can stay from just one day," we also accept workation stays of about a week. In addition to applying for a workation stay directly, those who own tokens for "Roopt Kagurazaka DAO," a DAO-type share house that started in June 2022, can use those tokens to stay for a week on a workation at a Roopt share house in Miyagi Prefecture. Overview of Roopt Share House Workation

This time, I did a workation at Roopt Okumatsushima, a Roopt share house located in Shin-Tomei, Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. It was getting a little chilly, and my workation in the Miyagi coastal area, where autumn was in full swing, was very fulfilling. Although workation facilities are increasing nationwide, there are very few examples of workations being held in share houses, so I will write about my experience and impressions of this "share house workation," including that perspective!

Workation period: November 1st (Tue) - November 8th (Tue), 2022

Workation location: Roopt Okumatsushima (Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture)

About the shared house "Roopt Okumatsushima"

First, let me briefly introduce "Roopt Okumatsushima," where I used for a 7-night, 8-day workation.

This share house is located in the western part of Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture, about a 15-minute walk from Higashimei Station on the JR Senseki Line. As you can see in the photos below, this share house is characterized by the size of its building and rooms, with private rooms averaging 12 tatami mats in size. In addition to residential stays, it also accepts group and family stays, making it a share house where communication can be fostered not only among residents but also among others.

Workation

Now, let's get to the main topic: I'll write about how I spent my 7-night, 8-day workation.

Day 1: Tuesday, November 1, 2022

I arrived at Roopt Okumatsushima in the evening of the first day, so I spent the day making beds, preparing dinner, and finishing up the remaining work. The residents all had different daily routines, and there were some I didn't get to meet, so I went to sleep looking forward to seeing them the next day.

This is the room where I stayed for a week. There was a space of about the same size in front of it, so I was able to use the entire 12-tatami mat room very spaciously.

Day 2: Wednesday, November 2, 2022

On the morning of the second day, I was able to meet all the residents, and the day started with conversations like, "Since we're all here, why don't we have a meal together sometime?" and "What days are you free?" I already knew many of the residents, so it was a pleasant moment where I felt like I was immediately part of the group.

On this day, I spent most of my time teleworking from within the shared house. I usually used my own room for online meetings, but when no one else was in the house, I would also hold online meetings or work in the living room. Just being able to work in a spacious place, something I don't often get when living alone, helps me feel more relaxed and makes me more productive.

In fact, I felt that I was more productive at Roopt Okumatsushima than usual. By the way, I also went for a run in between work, and it was a refreshing run with crisp air.

Roopt Okumatsushima has many stylishly renovated areas, and the kitchen designs in particular are very fashionable, so I, as a photographer, held an impromptu photoshoot of my favorite bottles. The share house and the town itself are quiet, making it an environment that inspires creativity. By the way, all the photos and videos used in this article were taken by me.

Since we were there anyway, we decided to eat out, so we drove to a restaurant called "Mori no KITCHEN" that mainly serves set meals for lunch. They accept credit cards and electronic money, which is great for people who don't like to carry much cash. By the way, "Mori no KITCHEN" is located at the following location.
