First, let me briefly introduce the appeal of museums.

① Exploration of history and culture

Many exhibits showcase the region's history, traditions, and cultural assets, offering an opportunity to view the area where we live from a different perspective.

Through the exhibits and collections, you can learn about local history and gain new knowledge.

② Fun for both children and adults

Museums are appealing as places where children can learn about history in a fun way, together with adults.

The facility offers a wide range of hands-on exhibits and workshops, allowing children to deepen their knowledge through practical experience.

Adults can also have the opportunity to learn things they didn't know before, and it can be a catalyst for satisfying their intellectual curiosity.

③ Opportunities for communication

Visiting with family and viewing the same exhibits can spark conversation and strengthen family bonds.

Learning new things and enjoying them together will create more memories and deepen your bond even further.

The same can be said not only for family, but also for friends and couples.

13 Recommended Museums in Miyagi Prefecture

Now, let's introduce some museums in Miyagi Prefecture.

Each museum has a variety of interesting exhibits, so I recommend visiting museums while reading this article.

[Sendai City] Sendai City Museum

The Sendai City Museum is a museum that opened in 1961 on the site of the third bailey of Sendai Castle, for the purpose of preserving, exhibiting, and researching a collection of materials (cultural properties donated by the Date family of Sendai) that were donated by the Date family in 1951.

The museum exhibits and houses historical, cultural, and artistic materials related to Sendai, including the national treasure "Keicho Embassy to Europe Related Materials," which includes three items such as the "Portrait of Hasekura Tsunenaga," a national treasure registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World, as well as important cultural properties such as armor and a battle surcoat used by Date Masamune.

When you think of Sendai, you naturally think of Date Masamune, and this museum displays letters written by Date Masamune himself and lacquerware from the Date family, making it the perfect place to learn about the history of the Date family.

The Tohoku University campus is also nearby the museum, so taking a stroll and visiting the museum is a nice way to enjoy the area.

*Closed until spring 2024 for renovations.

[Sendai City] Tohoku Gakuin University Museum

The Tohoku Gakuin University Museum was established with the aim of communicating research activities to society by collecting, organizing, preserving, and making available materials related to research results obtained within the university.

We explore the history of Miyagi and the Tohoku region from an ethnological perspective, using ancient artifacts such as burial jars used during the Kofun period and numerous stone steles discovered on the seabed off Matsushima.

This museum is constantly being updated by Tohoku Gakuin University students, who, as part of their museum internships, change and update the exhibits every year and also organize student-led events.

Since it's within walking distance of Sendai Station, it's a great place to stop by while sightseeing in Sendai.

Address: 1-1-3 Tsuchitoi, Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture 980-0065 Opening Hours: 9:30 - 17:00 Closed: Sundays and public holidays Admission Fee: 200 yen for adults Access: 5-minute walk from Gobashi Station on the Sendai City Subway Namboku Line Parking: None Official Website:https://www.ipc.tohoku-gakuin.ac.jp/tgum/

[Sendai City] Underground Forest Museum

The "Underground Forest Museum" in Sendai City, as its name suggests, is a museum that primarily exhibits artifacts excavated from underground.

The Tomizawa archaeological site in Taihaku Ward, Sendai City, preserves and displays a Paleolithic surface dating back 20,000 years, which was excavated on-site. The exhibit also includes materials discovered during the excavation, allowing visitors to reflect on the environment and lifestyle of that time.

We employ a method to display the ruins in their excavated state, without separating them from the earth, using a special "construction and civil engineering method" without a floor, and a "preservation treatment method" that applies cutting-edge scientific technology.

It's rare to find a facility where you can see ancient ruins in their original state, so it's definitely worth a visit.

Address: 4-3-1 Nagamachi Minami, Taihaku-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture 982-0012 Opening Hours: 9:00 - 16:45 Closed: Mondays Admission Fee: 460 yen (General) Access: 20-minute walk from JR Nagamachi Station Parking: Available Official Website:https://www.sendai-c.ed.jp/~bunkazai/~chiteinomori/

[Sendai City] Sendai City Tram Preservation Museum

While Sendai City currently boasts both JR train lines and a subway system, did you know that it used to have a streetcar system?

The Sendai City Tram Museum is operated as a facility to pass on to future generations the image of the city trams that were a beloved mode of transportation for citizens for half a century from the end of the Taisho era and continued to run through the city of Sendai.

This is a place where you can see things that were used in the past, such as the streetcar body, pantograph, and tickets, and imagine what Sendai was like when the streetcars were still running.

I would recommend the Sendai City Tram Museum to both families and railway enthusiasts.

[Sendai City] Tohoku University Museum of Science and Technology

Tohoku University has accumulated a wide variety of academic materials and specimens over its more than 100-year history. The Tohoku University Museum of Science and Technology is operated to store and manage these academic materials and specimens, as well as to widely disseminate the university's latest research findings to the local community.

You can learn about the history of the Earth and the region through various approaches, including the evolution of life on Earth, rocks and minerals, and geographical maps.

In addition, we also hold special exhibitions at external venues such as the Sendai Science Museum, under the title "Everything About the Tohoku University Museum of Science and Technology."

The more than two million specimens and materials seem to speak volumes about the contributions that Tohoku University's research has made to society.

[Tagajo City] Tohoku Historical Museum

The Tohoku Historical Museum, located in Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture, is a museum where you can learn in detail about the history and culture of Tohoku, based on historical materials dating back to the Kofun period and other ancient times.

In addition to viewing exhibits, the museum offers many interactive activities for visitors, demonstrating its commitment to community-based museum management.

We also offer courses on reading historical documents and ancient manuscripts, providing an irresistible opportunity for history enthusiasts to learn how to interpret history from historical sources.

They also offer fire-starting workshops, which would be an interesting experience for survival enthusiasts.

[Shiogama City] Shiogama Shrine Museum

The Shiogama Shrine Museum, located within the grounds of the Shio-Hiko Shrine & Shiogama Shrine (Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture), which are designated as important cultural properties of Japan, was opened in 1965 with the aim of collecting and preserving historical materials related to Shiogama Shrine, as well as widely disseminating its history to society and contributing to education and outreach.

The first floor houses a variety of valuable cultural artifacts that tell the long history of "Shiogama-sama" and its divine virtues, including weapons, paintings, crafts, ancient documents, and classical texts. The second floor displays materials related to the salt industry and fishing, which are associated with Shiotsuchi-no-Okina-no-Kami, the principal deity of Shiogama Shrine.

Shiogama Shrine has a long history dating back at least to the Heian period, and it is a valuable place where one can learn a part of that history.

Shiogama Shrine is also known for its beautiful cherry blossoms, so visiting the museum in spring while enjoying the blossoms will allow you to discover a different side of the shrine's charm.

[Matsushima Town] Matsushima Imperial Villa Museum, Miyagi Prefecture

On the second floor of a new facility called "Matsushima Rikyu," which opened in 2020 in Matsushima, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, there is a museum called the "Miyagi Prefecture Matsushima Rikyu Museum."

The museum showcases the story behind the creation of Matsushima Bay, a member of the World's Most Beautiful Bays Club, the origins of the Tohoku region's topography, and exhibits a life-size model and fossils of Utatsusaurus, the world's oldest known ichthyosaur. It is operated not only to convey the beauty of Matsushima but also to share its history.

The facility includes gardens, restaurants, and shops, making it a place where people of all ages can enjoy themselves in a variety of ways.

Matsushima has many other shops as well, so this museum is a great place to visit as part of a tour of Matsushima.

[Ishinomaki City] Ishinomori Manga Museum

The late Shotaro Ishinomori, the creator of Kamen Rider, used to cycle two to three hours from his hometown of Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, to a theater in Ishinomaki City during his junior and senior high school years, and he cherished Ishinomaki as his second home.

There is a manga museum dedicated to Mr. Shotaro Ishinomori in Ishinomaki City, and it has become a facility loved by people of all ages, from children to adults.

In addition to Kamen Rider, there are exhibits on classic works such as Cyborg 009 and Android Kikaider, and special exhibitions focus on a single work (e.g., Kaiketsu Zorori).

Having suffered tsunami damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake, this museum offers insights into the recovery process, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Ishinomaki for the first time.

[Ishinomaki City] Ishinomaki City Museum

Ishinomaki City once had a museum facility called the "Ishinomaki Cultural Center," but it was damaged by the tsunami during the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, the collections and other materials were rescued and taken over, and in 2021 the "Ishinomaki City Museum" was established.

Located within the "Maruhon Maki Art Terrace," a cultural facility designed by architect So Fujimoto, the Ishinomaki City Museum allows visitors to learn about Ishinomaki's history from the Jomon period onward and the lives of people from the past.

As befits a new museum, it makes full use of media art, and the beauty of the exhibits is well worth seeing.

Maruhon Maki Art Terrace hosts a variety of events, making it a place where you can enjoy more than just the museum.

[Tome City] Shotaro Ishinomori Hometown Memorial Museum

The "Shotaro Ishinomori Hometown Memorial Museum" was established in Tome City, his birthplace, to commemorate the achievements of Shotaro Ishinomori, who is hailed as the "King of Manga."

This museum visually showcases the history of Shotaro Ishinomori, featuring a recreation of his room in the legendary apartment building "Tokiwa-so" where he lived, as well as a fan he received from famous manga artists to celebrate his 45th anniversary as a manga artist.

In addition, special exhibitions featuring renowned manga artists from all over Japan are also held.

In Japan, where manga culture is deeply rooted, the memorial museum dedicated to Shotaro Ishinomori, who can be considered its pioneer, is a must-see.

Tome City is a rich town steeped in ancient history and culture dating back to the Jomon period. The Tome City Historical Museum focuses on the theme of "Samurai Culture and the Lives of the Common People," providing an overview of the region's development from the Jomon period to the early modern period, and exhibiting the culture and lifestyles of samurai and commoners during the early modern period.

The museum displays items of historical value, such as armor bestowed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Visiting the ruins of Sanuma Castle (Sanuma Fortress), located right next to the history museum, will give you a better understanding of the meaning and background of the exhibits.

Furthermore, there is a history of citizens planting cherry trees on the castle ruins, making it a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in Tome City.

[Kesennuma City] Kesennuma Shark Museum

Finally, I'd like to change things up a bit and introduce the Kesennuma Shark Museum, Japan's only shark museum.

Based on the concept of "an interactive museum to learn about the bond between Kesennuma's sea and its people," visitors can learn about sharks, for which Kesennuma boasts the largest catch in Japan, and explore Kesennuma's past, present, and future through four zones: "Memories of the Disaster," "Bonds," and "Living with the Sea."

The facility also houses an "Ice Museum," where visitors can learn about ice, which is essential for the distribution of freshly caught seafood, in an enjoyable way.

With restaurants and shops located within the facility, it's a beloved spot not only for tourists but also for local residents.
