In Miyagi Prefecture, cherry blossoms typically reach full bloom around mid-April, attracting many visitors during that time. There are also many recommended cherry blossom viewing spots around the four properties in the prefecture operated by the share house brand "Roopt" (as of April 2023). This time, we will introduce cherry blossom viewing spots in Shiogama City, Matsushima Town, Higashimatsushima City, and Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture that are accessible by car! Please use this as a reference when you go cherry blossom viewing.

The cherry blossoms at Shiogama Shrine, which boasts a history of over 1,000 years, are one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Miyagi Prefecture. Many varieties of cherry trees bloom throughout the spacious grounds, and combined with the scenery unique to a shrine, such as the gardens and approach to the shrine, visitors can enjoy the various expressions of the cherry blossoms. On a clear day, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Shiogama Bay and the islands of Matsushima beyond, and even on rainy days, it is a place with a special atmosphere.

Matsushima Town's Saigyo-modoshi-no-matsu Park is named after a legend that tells of the Kamakura period poet Saigyo Hoshi, who, while traveling through the country, engaged in a Zen dialogue with a young boy under a large pine tree, lost the argument, and turned back. The view of Matsushima, one of Japan's three most scenic spots, seen through the cherry blossoms is simply breathtaking. The cafe "le Roman" located within the park offers views of Matsushima through its glass windows, making it a recommended spot even outside of cherry blossom season.

Located on a hill, Takiyama Park boasts an observation deck offering panoramic views of the city and the opportunity to enjoy the sight of the Blue Impulse aerobatic team practicing. With approximately 500 cherry trees in full bloom during the spring, the park is a popular recreational spot for residents year-round. Its numerous stairs and slopes also make it a great place for a light workout.

Hiyoriyama Park in Ishinomaki City, which offers a panoramic view of the recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake, is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in the prefecture during the spring. Cherry blossoms bloom from the hilltop down to the foot of the mountain, making it a rare place where you can look down on the cherry blossoms. During the cherry blossom season, the area gets very crowded with cars, so it is recommended that those who can come by public transport do so.

Asahiyama, a prefectural natural park in Ishinomaki City, is characterized by its scenery of torii gates and cherry blossoms. You can enjoy the cherry blossoms at both the entrance to the shrine and the mountaintop. Located about a 15-minute drive from Ishinomaki Station, it's a quiet spot with clean air where you can feel refreshed just by being there. In autumn, it becomes a spectacular spot for viewing autumn foliage, so be sure to enjoy the changes from spring to autumn.
