Many people who watch cat videos on social media like YouTube and Instagram probably think, "I want to own a cat someday." And for those who already own cats, finding a home where both they and their cats can live comfortably is not easy. Furthermore, some of you may even want to "live in a share house with your cat."
To answer these requests, Roopt has installed a catio in a room at Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture! What's more, this catio was built through a DIY workshop with local cat lovers! Please take a look at the completed catio in this article, along with a full account of the DIY workshop held in January 2023.
*The cat featured in this report was brought by a participant of the DIY workshop from their home. They post about their daily life with four cats on a Twitter account called "Bucchan-chi," so please check that out too!https://twitter.com/bucchanshome
Mr. Yamauchi is an upcycled furniture artist based in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. With the concept of "making the most of what exists and enjoying life," he creates furniture by combining scrap materials and transforms disused furniture into stylishly painted, reusable pieces. Recently, he has started offering personal workshops for furniture painting and DIY furniture, making him a go-to person for anything related to furniture.

Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka is a share house located near Hiyoriyama Park, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ishinomaki City. It operates in a renovated two-story former company dormitory. It consists of four units: Room 101 (3DK), Room 102 (2DK), Room 201 (3DK), and Room 202 (2DK). You can use one private room within each unit, or you can rent an entire unit for yourself.
It is a highly flexible share house where you can enjoy a lifestyle similar to that of a rental apartment, even though it is a share house.

This time, with Mr. Yamauchi as the instructor, we held a DIY workshop to create a catio and install it in the living room of Room 101 at Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka. Six cat lovers living in Ishinomaki City and the surrounding areas participated.
Here is the image Mr. Yamauchi created for this occasion. It's easy to imagine cats happily using it, isn't it? Mr. Yamauchi prepared the parts in advance, and the workshop proceeded in a way that only required combining and installing them, so it was completed in just 4 hours, from 1 PM to 5 PM.
Some of the participants also did DIY at home and were very interested in Mr. Yamauchi's tools and techniques, asking questions throughout the workshop. Also, based on Mr. Yamauchi's lecture, participants cooperated with each other to create the parts, and it seems that connections were formed through their shared love for cats and DIY. Please see the photos for a full account of the event.
And here is the completed catio! A catio where cats can enjoy themselves to their heart's content has been born at Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka.
A participant immediately brought their cat from home, and although a little hesitant at first, the cat played on the freshly made catio. This scene was irresistible for cat lovers, and it goes without saying that a photo session began.
Roopt's first catio DIY workshop concluded with great success. To all the participants and Mr. Yamauchi, the instructor, thank you very much!
Through this workshop, Room 101 of Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka has been reborn as a "share house where you can live with cats." As mentioned earlier, Roopt Ishinomaki Hiyorigaoka also allows residents to "rent an entire floor," so there's no need to worry about inconveniencing other sharemates. If you are looking for a property where you can live with your cat, please consider it positively.
If you are considering moving into a property that is "pet-friendly" for not only cats but also dogs, please contact Roopt first.
